Locals gain marketing skills in social media

IMPERIAL — With the age of social media in full swing, local Valley business owners and entrepreneurs gained the latest how to’s of marketing their business on a social media platform during a two-part seminar, here Friday afternoon.
Coordinated by the Imperial Valley College’s economic and workforce development division, the first social media marketing workshop saw more than 100 attendees from all walks of life.
“We’re really excited by the success of the seminar and the amount of people in attendance,” said Efrain Silva, dean of economic and workforce development for IVC.
As the social media age begins to impact local and global businesses, Silva was glad to be able to bring the latest marketing strategies to the Valley.
“It shows you that the revolution of social media applies to everyone, regardless of what you may do for a living or where you might be. So, I think the applicability is represented by the diverse group of people we have in the audience,” Silva said. 
Sponsored by grant funding from IVC, the seminar featured presenters Phil Goodman, president and chief executive officer of Genergraphics, and Aaron Popejoy, creative director and principal of Conveyor Group.
“We’re kind of like breaking it down and making it easy so people can feel comfortable with it and use it like any other tool,” Popejoy said.
For Marcela Piedra, El Centro’s director of economic development, the seminar was a learning experience that will help guide the marketing focus for the city. 
“We have a website and a Facebook (page), so we were just interested to see what was the best way to communicate our message to the community and to the residents,” Piedra said.
“It was really interesting because it gave you ways on how you can target your audience. It was really helpful,” she said.
