5.5.2008 Save the Developers! Local Website Spreads Across The Globe Like Wildfire IMPERIAL, Calif. – May 5, 2008 – Save The Developers! Nerds, geeks, coders, and internet junkies unite. What’s known in web speak as “going viral” took place last month. Not from the cradle of Silicon Valley either, but from right here in the Imperial Valley. A new site called “SaveTheDevelopers.org” launched at the end of March and has since received nearly a hundred thousand unique visits. Almost thirty thousand people dropped by in the first week alone. And, thanks to its very supportive following, the site is now available in seven languages and being shared worldwide through the web development community. What in the world is “save the developers” you ask? The site and the grassroots campaign are the brainchild of Conveyor Group, an Imperial-based firm with a team that is no stranger to garnering recognition for developing new web technologies. “The site is really just a platform for promoting new ideas that save time and improve the web experience,” Stated Ron Goff, Technical Director. “The significance of our first campaign is what drove this traffic,” he added. The first campaign he is speaking of is helping promote the use of modern web browser software. Specifically pushing those surfers that use Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 into upgrading or switching. IE6, as it is more “affectionately” called, makes up about 31% of web surfing worldwide. It’s now closing in on eight years of service and is entirely outdated and non-secure. Microsoft itself no longer supports the product. Professional web developers are actually required to build entirely different sites for such users, or severely limit the integration of modern features when they build a new site. Either that or ignore 30% of potential visitors. “We just couldn’t let this go on any longer,” said Kevin Thompson, a developer himself on the Conveyor Group team. Kevin took the lead on this project by writing some code that any web developer can place on a page. It looks for those site visitors using IE6 and shows them a drop-down window that links to a list of reasons to upgrade. “Not only does eliminating IE6 save us a great deal of time and frustration, it gives developers more freedom to build the next generation of the web - sooner rather than later,” he added. The site launched at the end of March and a few press releases went out to some technical blogs. “By the next morning, we were getting thousands of visits and hundreds of supportive letters from all over the world.” “We were a little surprised just how well received this initiative was,” added Goff. It turns out that a few key tech news sites picked up the release and took it very seriously. From there, it spread like wildfire. “If you want to see how widespread this thing is, just Google ‘Save the developers’ and see what happens.” “There are dozens of major articles and blogs referencing the campaign,” Said Aaron Popejoy, Creative Director. “This is just one of our many R&D projects, but it really hit a nerve with the technical community.” “We now have thousands of web developers using the Conveyor Group code on their sites - and it started right here in the Imperial Valley,” he added. Conveyor Group, an Imperial Valley based design firm, was originally established in 1997 at the height of the web boom. Over the past ten years, they have grown from a two person design firm located in downtown El Centro, to a full service agency with a dozen specialized team members. They are now located in Imperial, occupying a newly-built studio. Their specialties include brand strategy, advanced web design, commercial video production, and custom software development. visit SaveTheDevelopers << Back |
