12.26.2007 Going Web 2.0 in 2008
For those that don’t already know, Web 2.0 is a catch phrase used in contemporary website development. Many have heard the term, but don’t quite understand what it means.

According to one of the most respected publishers in the industry, Web 2.0 is: “The network as platform, spanning all connected devices; Web 2.0 applications are those that make the most of the intrinsic advantages of that platform: delivering software as a continually-updated service that gets better the more people use it, consuming and remixing data from multiple sources, including individual users, while providing their own data and services in a form that allows remixing by others, creating network effects through an ‘architecture of participation,’ and going beyond the page metaphor of Web 1.0 to deliver rich user experiences.” -OREILLY

There’s probably even more to it than that, but what does this mean for your website? Is there anything you can do to take advantage of Web 2.0?

Just ask yourself these questions:

Does my site have a Content Management System (CMS)?

Is my site built to with CSS (Cascading Style Sheets)?

Is it modular and expandable?

Can I survey or poll visitors?

Does it take advantage of blogs or bulletin boards?

Do I use or provide RSS feeds?

Can I benefit from wikis?

Can I use widgets to increase functionality?

Does it have audio and video streaming?

Is PodCasting for me?

Does my site work with mobile devices?

Am I providing a platform for social networking?

Can I benefit from offering membership or e-newsletter sign-ups?

Have I maximized my SEO (Search Engine Optimization)?

How well does my site rank on search engines?

If any of these items is familiar to you, or you are confident that they are part of your current website, then you are likely Web 2.0 compliant. If not, you may want to consider adding some of this functionality to your site. Web 2.0 is all about making the internet a more satisfying experience instead of just a bunch of online brochures and one way streets. A way to communicate, share ideas, and live a digital life - in both directions. Your site can become an excellent marketing and public relations tool with Web 2.0 implementation. Perhaps even generate more leads and help shape your direction for years to come.
